Tiananmen Square

Tiananmen Square is the heartland of Beijing and the largest city square in the world. As the symbol of China, it not only witnessed the Chinese people's struggle for democracy, freedom, but also the important place for major celebrations and grand assembly. 500 meters wide from east to west, 880 meters long from north to south, on the square there stand the scenic spots including Tiananmen Tower, Monument to the People's Heroes, Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, Great Hall of the People and National Museum of China.

Tiananmen Tower
Tiananmen TowerTiananmen Tower was initially built in 1417 during Ming Dynasty, used as the front door to the Forbidden City. In the past, here is the place to declare who became the emperor to the common people. Until 1911 when the last feudal kingdom was over, no one could enter the tower except for the royal families. Now if you like, you could stand at the tower to have the best view of Tiananmen Square.

Monument to the People's Heroes
The Monument to the People's Heroes is located in the center of Tiananmen Square. Built in 1952, it is the largest monument in China. 'The People's Heroes are Immortal' written by Chairman Mao is engraved on the monument. Eight relief sculptures show the development of Chinese modern history and two rows of white marble railings enclose the monument look simple and beautiful. It was built to commemorate those soldiers who fell fighting in the revolution.

Chairman Mao Memorial Hall
Chairman Mao Memorial HallChairman Mao Memorial Hall sits at the south side of Tiananmen Square just behind the Monument to the People's Heroes. The Hall is divided into three halls and Chairman Mao's body lies in a crystal coffin in one of the halls surrounded by fresh bouquets. Please note that no cameras or handbags are allowed inside the hall. And if you are wearing a hat, please take it off before going into the building.

Great Hall of the People
Great Hall of the People sits on the western side of Tiananmen Square. Finished in 1959, it is the site holding China National People's Congress meetings and diplomatic activities. It is 336 meters long from north to south, 206 meters wide from east to west and 46.5 meters high at the highest point. Now Great Hall of the People is open to both domestic and foreign visitors.

National Museum of China
National Museum of China sits at the east side of Tiananmen Square, just opposite the Great Hall of the People. Inside, there are a lot of precious material objects, models, books, pictures and to present the history and modern China. The large number of cultural relics illustrating show the long history and glorious culture of China from 1.7 million years ago to 21st century.
